SANTORINI - PART TWO - SEPTEMBER 2006
"ON THE BEACH - Perivolos is one of the nice beaches in Santorini, and together with Perissa form the longest black-sanded beach on the island. Of course, the sand is not as beautiful as the one you may find in Algarve, but the Aegean Sea is nice enough to keep you busy..."
"CALDERA - Oia, Immerovigli and Fira look amazingly on the top of the cliff around the caldera, but the blue is impressive!"
"CHURCH - Santorini has more than 250 churches for a population of less than 14000 people. The main church at Oia (pronounced [i.a]), located 11 km far from Fira, at the northwest edge of the island, is a beautiful building"
"CHURCH - Another one in Oia"
"OIA is famous for its sunsets. By 6:30 p.m., hordes of people start gathering for the free show..."
"SUNSET - Usually, the diving of the sun into the sea provides the chance for some beautiful pictures"
"THE SHOW IS OVER - The sun went down and the hordes start retiring!"
"COUPLE - There is always a nice person to get a picture"
"WINDMILL - Greek Islands are also famous for their windmills. This one in Oia looks quite nice..."
"OIA - After sunset... Beautiful terraces!"
"CHURCH - This is probably the most photographed church of Santorini, but during the day. The view towards the caldera, behind the church is stunning, but you can't see it at night..."
"THE 1800 RESTAURANT, housed in a mansion that was built in the middle of the 18th century, is a typical captain's house and a «living museum». It offers a roof garden with a magnificent view of the sea and some delicious Mediterranean cuisine. The fish we had was quite nice and the wine perfect"

Hi everybody. This week was another hectic one, so I’m sorry to have been a bit absent from here and from your blogs. Hope to catch up during the weekend, as we reached TGIF! Thanks for your much appreciated comments and support.
Enjoy Oia and its fabulous sunsets!
Santorini is somewhere I've always fancied going, so thanks for these posts. I'd like to paint there. The shot which arrested me most was the one with the church windows illuminated at night. btw - I'm collecting the cartoons in 'THE DEDICATED BLOGGER' (profile)if you'd like a further look!
A paradise! When is the best moment to go (nice weather, not too crowded)?
Oh what terrific photos! And I love your comment that there is always a nice person to take your photo! Nice people attract nice people!
O for Oia. Nice pics, Gil.
And what a contrast, the blue sea looks dark at sunset...
Have a nice weekend.
Thanks for taking time to visit my blog!
Thanks for these fantastic pictures. This looks like a wonderful place and it has found a spot on my travel wish list.
Beautiful photos of my father's homeland. We're planing a trip back in July, and seeing these makes me miss it all the more.
PARADISE is the only one and right name for these pictures here, Gil! I enjoyed it very much.
My post today is also about the beach...:-)
Everything is so colorful and a nice person was there to make a picture of two nice persons.
One of my favorite places! How warm is the water???
I love that blue! and blue and blue......forever. That's my favourite colour. Many thanks for sharing blue dreams.
"What if you slept? A what if in your sleep you dreamed? And what if in your dream, you went to heaven and there...."and what if when you awoke, you are in Oia?
Ah!what then?

They predict a grey sky for this We ,
So I enjoyed very much this little daydream in Santorini...
Amazing the crowd waiting for the sunset... Wish I was there!!!
Enjoy the WE.
great trip to the wonderful mediteranean world! love the blue of the see and the white of the buildings! thanks for stopping by uproad!
Gil,
I have explored a few islands of Greece years back, and these fabulous pictures brought back good memories.
Great to catch up on your lovely posts. These, on the archipelago of Santorini with the blue waters of the Aegean sea around it, are particularly delightful. :)

Stunning photos! You make me really homesick :-)
I love the whole "chasing the sunset" scene on these islands. We were on Milos a few years ago and it was just the same - for an hour before sunset everyone gravitated to the sunset spots, watched the sunset and then left, big smiles on faces. It was a bit like going to a festival or concert.
It is my dream to go to Santorini. Years ago I saw a movie which was filmed there and promised myself that one day I will get there. I love the cliffside houses and spectacular views. Lucky you!!!
Look what I've found - some incredibly beautiful photos of Santorini from a Greek blog. There's even an English translation at the bottom of the page.
Hi gmg, You forgot to answer my questions ... and to visit my site! :-)
Wow! Spectacular 'haunting blue' photo tour. Indeed, the diving sun provided awesome sunsets ... the 'remains of the day' ... my favorite time (combined with good food & wine and my favorite person to share them with).
Oh my goodnes, Gil, how lucky I am to have swung by in time to see these photos of the sites on the island. The sunset is stunningly beautiful, for sure. Thanks for this little excursion, so different from the one I just took in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas.
Again you have taken the perfect photos. I just love the lighting on the homes, and the water, wow is that ever blue, was that you in the water?
Thanks for the trip
"Plus belle la vie" comme ils disent pour un feuilleton marseillais.
Santorini parait réellement pardisiaque même pour un agnostique.
It's always a fiest to visit your blog for pictures are magnificent! I went to Greece few years back so I can quite understand your feelings about this country and your photographs remind me of beautiful time I had over there.
Thank you for commenting my blog. Your words always cheer me up and I really appreciate it.
Thanks.
Everything is so beautiful and of course I must compliment both of you too...lovely shot and beautiful smile of course!
Symphonie en bleu et blanc...
Always a pleasure. Loved the sinking sun and your end of day photo. ~ Lynn
What a handsome, happy couple on (what seems to be) top of the world ;-)
better not show these pics to my mister or we'll be going broke heading over to Santorini! looks fantastic!
Sounds super cool!! What a beautiful place.. so fresh looking in its white buildings on the cliff surrounded by the beautiful blue ocean! Picture perfect for sure.
My favorite Greek island. Love the photos.
Paz
I love the photos of the houses - because they are so different from what I'm familiar with. They really make me feel as if I've traveled to a different country. The shots of sunsets are also lovely. You and your wife looked really happy and relaxed. That makes the best photos!
Thanks for visiting Norwich Daily Photo and leaving your comments. Terribly sorry I've been busy decorating our new house and in the middle of packing, too. Once settled I shall be able to visit your blog more regularly. Have a great week ahead!

A Pinay In England
Your Love Coach
I, Woman
fantastic sunsets ..and loved the blue...the seas in India are not so blue though ..
There's some wonderful photos here. It is amazing that when you travel, there does seem to be someone who is willing to take a photo for you. I always think in the back of my mind though, please don't take off with my camera. LOL. I love the photos looking over the city.
the blue sea of the aegean!
hehehe ... i saved the 3rd pic from above for my screen and my wife demanded for hers too
:-)
i always liked santorini....love the architecture..want to go there..then as u know by now..i wanna go everywhere!!
My wife and I have long wanted to explore the Greek isles. Having taught art history for a number of years, I can't come up with a decent excuse why we have never gotten to Greece. Your photos reaching us in the depths of this New England winter are especially appetizing. Your ongoing travels will at least let us continue to enjoy continued vicarious pleasures. Thanks for keeping this going.
You have such stunning photos...your eye is amazing on how you "frame" them ...I am enjoying your travels! thanks for all the visits and nice comments. You are awesome.
Julia,
It would be an incredible experience your painting in Santorini…
I’ve checked the cartoons and they’re amazing!
Peter,
Probably mid to late June, though early September was not bad at all…
Kim,
Thanks. Loved the comment on nice people…
Indrani,
Thanks. It’s always a pleasure to land at «I-share»!
Dan,
Thanks! Nice choice for your travel list.
Diane,
Thanks for commenting here. Hope you have a great trip to your father’s homeland!
Susane,
I’m glad that you enjoyed. Also loved to see your Folly Beach picture…
Dick,
Thanks; also for the nice person comment… ;)
Kuanyin,
Warm enough; don’t worry! Over 23º Celsius (73.4 Fahrenheit) from June through October…
J,
If you happen to wake up dreaming in Oia, try to dreamily stay and sleep at the Mystique Hotel… ;))
Marie-Noyale,
Every evening you have this kind of free show in Oia. Sorry for your grey skies; we had a quite acceptable weekend here in Lisbon, though today...
Lara,
Thanks. Blue and white is almost always perfect…
Celine,
Great to see you back and to revive your memories of a nice Greek vacation. Look forward to seeing the pictures of your last travel…
Tinsie,
The sunset show is a must in the islands! You’re right; the pictures from Klearchos are unbeatable…
Marguerite-Marie,
Merci.
Citygirl,
Are you making a reservation? Hurry…
Joey,
«Haunting blue»; great concept… Favourite time, favourite person, good food & wine, what a treat…
Annie,
Sure the Ozark Mountains had something interesting to see…
Lilli & Nevada,
The Greek blue is incredible. The first time I was there (1975) I thought it was absolutely unique. And it must be said that I was born in an island (Madeira) and lived in other (Terceira, Azores) when I was young… Yes, that’s me in water!
Deslilas,
Paradis sur terre? Il peut…
Irina,
Thanks. As you’ve been in Greece, you know how beautiful it is…
I adore your wonderful Moscow pictures!
Shionge,
Great to see you here; hope everything is now ok and you’ll be feeling better after your US accident. Thanks for the nice comment (from a nice girl)!
Alice,
OK, rhapsody in blue! I prefer Gershwin… ;)
Lynn,
I think you would love to eat dinner at the 1800…
Isabella,
Thanks! Another nice comment (from another nice girl)!
Piika,
It’s hard to go on a starving budget, but it’s worth spending some cash to get there…
Di.Di.,
It’s actually super cool…
Paz,
Good taste, great choice…
Cergie,
Joy,
Thanks! I tell you: Greece is quite different when you compare it with UK.
Hope your new home will be ready soon…
Lakshmi,
That Greek blue is without comparison…
Lv2,
There is always a good rule to avoid someone taking off with yours: ask only people with better cameras… ;)
Azer Mantessa,
Hey, that one is copyright protected… ;))
Shooting Star,
Me too! Everywhere! ;)
Ted Roth,
Thanks! Art history without Greece? You’ll have to find a great creative excuse… ;))
Hope the weather will improve in New England!
Neva,
Thanks! With such a beauty in front of the camera, it’s not that difficult to frame it… ;)
Yes agree, Marvalous sunsets , not to nema the great sun, everything is breating the Good life....
Cheers from JoAnn
Awesome photos of Santorini.
The architecture is exactly what I thought it would be.
JoAnn,
Good life? Yeah!!
Ming,
Thanks. Typical Greek island architecture!
These have the loveliest shades of blue! Looks like a perfect place for a holiday!!
Sigma,
You're right; and it's actually a perfect holiday place...
