NEW YORK, ALWAYS NEW YORK

STILL SOME TIME... - MAY 2007

***

"A WONDERFUL STROLL – 2008.08.08 is a very special day for us: we got married thirty three years ago!

As we both love New York (I’m a bit crazy about it), and I had the intention to finish my New York posts - May 2007 - before the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games ;)), I thought that one nice way to start the early morning commemorations of the date would be to post the last of those posts on 2008.08.08 at 08h08, Lisbon local time! And what would be the best picture to start? Actually the only one of the series where we are together: under the protection of Botero’s Eve, at the Time Warner Centre. A photo taken by the kindest security guard we had ever met… ;))"

***

"INDIANS DOWNTOWN? - I wonder what kind of performance they were preparing for that Sunday afternoon. Maybe one of the quite knowledgeable New York City bloggers would be kind enough to explain..."

"2ND&E12TH - This building at the corner of 2nd Avenue with E 12th Street looked pretty nice"

"4TH AVENUE – Love these buildings"

"CHRYSLER – My favourite New York skyscraper!"

"UNION SQUARE is one of my spots in New York. No wonder, with Barnes & Noble bookstore and W Hotel... Blue Water Grill will come later..."

"PUPPETS FROM TAIWAN – Very far away from Mickey Sabbath’s Manhattan Theatre of Indecency, Roth’s version..."

"BLUE WATER GRILL –Couldn’t be missed, even if it’s for brunch… But there was jazz!"

"COLUMBUS CIRCLE – View from the Time-Warner Centre towards Central Park South!"

"ASPARGUS at Whole Foods Market on Time Warner Centre"

"CHEESE"

"TIME SQUARE – Everyday Light and Sound show guaranteed"

"CHRYSLER – Pictured at night from The View, the only revolving roof top restaurant in New York. At the top of the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square"

"W TIMES SQUARE"

"TITO PUENTE at Birdland"

New York is surely a great place to post on 2008.08.08 at 08:08! Hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I loved being there… ;))
Taking into account the special character of the day, I also updated Blogtrotter Revival 70s & 80s with a post on the «English Riviera» and Blogtrotter Revival 90s with a post on «Rome, Italy». Have fun!!

Hahaha... happy 08.08.2008 and timing is great at 08.08 for the posting. Your series of New York day and night are so beautiful and have so much praise for all the photos. Love the buildings with those beautiful architectural designs, the huge sculpture and the streets of New York. Amazing. We dont get to see much of these chinese puppets anymore over here. Happy weekend. :) Look out for our Singapore team in table tennis. :) I wish they will bring back an olympics medal.

Happy Anniversary!! 8-8-08 is truly a special day for you. I love your New York shots. I'm glad to see a photo of the Blue Water Grill, I was just there during restaurant week and enjoyed it very much. Greetings to you and your wife on this special day!!!

Your anniversary is a wonderful milestone...congratulations. Your amazing longevity is matched with an amazing collection of photos. I loved the one of the two of you together. Incidentally, I appreciate your comments on my blogs, esp. today's. One rmark, tho, my photos on visualstpaul recently are from my vacation in NEW Mexico--not Mexico, where I often winter. Had to make that correction since New Mexicans are a bit sensitive about that frequent confusion. Have a great week-end!

Happy Anniversary!!!

I knew I should've chosen a simple date to remember as I hardly can remember mine. In fact, I can't remember the date now

*biting nail*

regarding the indian, fantastically, the indian guy seems to be the same person with the same costume I saw back in 1983.

quite a couple of them. i bet they were preparing to sing and dance as they did when i was there.

Great photos as always - and great commemoration of a special day. I have several sets of friends who rushed to get married on 8 August, 1988 - a dragon year by the Chinese calendar. And these couples are still together.

Hope your day is wonderful!

Enjoy yours and have a great weekend too, my special regards to your wife..and the beautiful model for all your posts!

I wish you two good health, love, peace and happiness and may you enjoy together very much successful and fruitful years ahead!
Your series of New York photos is really fantastic. The first one with you and your wife on it in the company of that “little” sculpture :-) is beautiful and interesting, indeed. Both of you look great. You wife always look so pretty and happy. This photo really was the best one to start.
I completely enjoyed this post and every photo you posted but I especially like the buildings with the beautiful architectural style and the Columbus circle photo.
Thank you for your visiting to my blog and always nice comments. Have a wonderful day!

Your photos of NY are beautiful I have only been there once and that was just to spend the night so never got to see any of it.

A terrific series of shots showing not only the place but the spirit of NYC. If you send me an email directly, I'll send you my own somewhat inferior shots of Columbus Circle from the very same location in Time Warner. If you're still in NYC, I suggest a trip to Roosevelt Island via the tramway and a walk to the southern tip of the island, the site of my Gotham photos, but also a good spot to view the river, the UN, and your favorite skyscraper. In early morning it's a spot to catch the city under great light, and in the evening you can catch the city lit up. Terrific visit to my own city!

Mazal tov/congratulations, dear Gil, to you and your wife. It seems that NY is your second biggest love. In my language gil means happiness--obviously a fitting name for you. May it continue. Blessings to you both.

What an auspicious day for your anniversary - let alone your marriage 33 years ago. First many congratulations. Love the photo in front of Botero's Eve. There's one the same in Monte Carlo, by the way - along with Adam. I love those sculptures. You both adorn it beautifully!

Wonderful photos you've posted of an obviously great time in New York. Many congratulations again for your anniversary.

Wishing you another 30 happy years at least! Congratulations. I am enjoying your NY photos...have never been there, but would like to, so for now, will just content myself with seeing it through your camera lens. The MOMA & Birdland would be the 1st & 2nd places I would head to, then maybe Carnegie Hall.

Beautiful series, Gil - I love NYC, too & you captured it perfectly! Beautiful buildings, colors, and just "the city."
Happy anniversary, too, & are you planning on going to the Olympics?

First off I would like to wish you and your life a Happy Anniversary! It is a special day indeed. :o)

I have never been to New York, but your pics seriously make me reconsider. I am not fond of large crowds but I would enjoy the diverse cultures and the food markets.... wow!

Those buildings on 4th avenue are very lovely. What time period is that from I wonder. I have always preferred older buildings. They have so much "substance", unlike their modern counterparts. :o)

I love all your photos. I can't believe how many places you visited in the city. Incredible! You should take me around when you come. ;-)That WAS nice of the guard to take your photo in the Time Warner Building. The last time I was in Whole Foods there, I started taking photos and was told to stop. No photos allowed, so you were very lucky to get some photos in. ;-)

Love the photos, and several of them were taken just blocks from my apartment.

We also love Blue Water Grill.... and had dinner there last Sunday. They have the BEST sushi!

The Union Square Barnes and Noble is my favorite bookstore.... one can spend hours there, browsing through their collections, sipping on a hot (or iced) coffee in their Starbucks cafe, or attending to one of their guest speakers promoting their latest book.

Anyway, looking forward to your next destination!

Bonjour Gil,

Although it's belated, hopefully it will just extend the celebration a bit.

33 yrs marriage, that is awesome! No doubt, your marriage should be a hearth, from when comes the peace, harmony, and warmth of soul and spirit. ** Hope you both had a wonderful anniversary day and & Many happy returns **

Btw, getting to Lesvos (Turkish: Midilli) and visit Ayvalik with the daily ferry, absolutely YES. Just do it. It's much more worth to see Ayvalik and its surrounding even on daily basis:)

Your wife has got a 'bright and warm smile':) I always LOVE seeing her Smile in your photos. I send you both Hugs and Warm Greetings. Oh, wait, your daughter looks like so pretty nice girl!

NYC is awesome! I too have been there for a few times, and worth to visit again and again because a piece of my heart still beats for NYC:)

Again thanks a lot for your kind and encouraging comments, Gil. Have a fruitful 'blue' new week.

Blessings,

~Nihal

Out of all your NY photos, I esp love the one of Columbus Circle and the view of Central Park.

It reminds me I had a hotdog on that corner of the park! It was a very hot May long weekend (Memorial Day?) and my friend a nd I found a shady spot in the park and fell asleep under a tree for a while....(we did not wake up to see a White rabbit rushing past though)

Hi everybody, thank you so much for your comments and wishes on my 08.08.08 post! It's lovely to have you here commemorating our official 33 years together! It was also amazing to have reached more than one hundred comments on a single post. Under the circumstances, I hope you’ll understand that I open an exception to my rule of answering to every single comment and make only a collective acknowledgement and answer… Thank you all, once again!!

I’ll make however an exception to the exception to answer some direct queries or remarks:

Alice SG,
Well a silver medal for the Singaporean girls was great at tennis table, taking into account that the gold medallist was China… ;)

Azer,
That Indian story is great! Sì non è vero è bene trovato…

Ted,
This was a May 2007 trip; anyhow, thanks for the tips, as I’ll surely get back to NYC sooner or later… ;)

Juka,
Thanks. I’ll try to save some more days to get to Warsaw & Krakow; for the time being it seems it’s raining cats and dogs there… ;))

Paul,
I’m going to the Olympics every day, in front of the TV set… ;))

Titania,
Sorry, I’ve no idea of what period they may be, the buildings on 4th Ave…

Paz,
After 58 times in NYC as a visitor, you must concede that we find some interesting spots… ;) A guy at the Whole Foods was also telling me «no photo», but I simple disregarded as if he was talking some odd language I didn’t understand… ;))

Julia,
Jaded jetsetter? Saw the show in Beijing on the front row: in front of a TV set… ;))

Dreamcatcher,
I started the digital era in 2000 with a Fujifilm 4700zoom, and then used a Canon G7 for some time in 2007, and a G9 from September 2007! The pre-digital era used many cameras, including lots of disposable… ;))

Nihal,
Thanks for the info! I think I’m going to Antalya for a week in September; directly from London Gatwick!

Lucie,
C’est vrai que ces immeubles rassemblent des cathédrales…;)

Dorothée,
Adam est de l’autre coté de l’entrée… ;))

Sigma,
Congratulations on your baby boy!!!

Ming,
It wasn’t Union Square, and I don’t think it was so far as Tompkins Square Park. Maybe around St. Marks in the Bowery…

It's been way too long for a visit but never too late to wish you a most 'Happy Anniversary', Gil. Loved catching up. With warm thoughts ...

On the other side of that fat woman (first pic) is a fat guy with a shiny dick ;-)

Times square is so lively, wish we had something like that in Toronto!

I'm not sure what led you to photograph that building on the corner of 2nd Ave and 12th street. Perhaps it was the deli that used to be there. However, it was either that building or one that occupied that corner that my grandfather lived in in 1899 when he first came to NYC.

Ted,
That's amazing! I photographed the building just because, like the Flatiron, some in Soho and the ones on the nexrt picture (4th Ave), I liked it. And I don't even think it comes on Liza Green's guide «New York for New Yorkers» that I bought in 1995, when I used to get more often to NYC...
