ΜΠΛΕ, AZUL, BLUE, BLEU, BLAU, AZURRO...

CRETE - SEPTEMBER 2006

"MIRABELLO BAY - On the way from Heraklion to Elounda, we caught this beautiful view of the Bay. It got its name during the Venetian occupation, when the Venetians built a fortress in Agios Nicolaos they named Mirabello (look at the beauty)"

"BLUE PALACE RESORT AND SPA - The first destination was the Blue Palace, a beautiful place to stay during a Cretan holiday"

"ROOM WITH A VIEW and a pool... Room 526, with brilliant sea views, was a wonderful experience. Incredibly blue!"

"BEACH - It is far from being a beautiful sandy beach, like those one can find in Algarve, but it had a decent service and the water was quite nice: clean and warm enough..."

"SPINALONGA - In 1579, the Venetians built a fortress in this small island. Fame came later to Spinalonga as it was, until 1957, one of the last active leper colonies in Europe. Today, the island is one of the main attractions for tourists staying in the Agios Nikolaos area"

"SEA ENTRANCE - This was one of the two entrances to the island; the other was named Dante's Gate, and was the lepers' entrance"

"WAITING for the fishermen's boat from Plaka to come and pick us back"

"FRESH OCTOPUS can be seen sun drying in front of a restaurant in Plaka..."

"AGIOS NICOLAOS, with approximately 8500 inhabitants, is the capital of the Lassithi Prefecture. It is located 66 km east of Heraklion, 70 km west of Sitia and 36 km north of Ierapetra. The most important landmark of the city is the circular lake - «Voulismeni» - located in the city centre, at the foot of the cliffs. According to the mythology, the goddess Athena used to take her bath in this lake. The depth of the lake is 64 m, its diameter is 137 m, and was connected to the sea only in 1870, when a canal was opened"

Some months ago, Peter was asking to see the pictures from Greece 2007. Well this is, for the time being, as close as I managed to get there: Greek Islands 2006! Starting with Crete (a recent passion) and lowering the delay to eighteen months… ;)
Enjoy this first Rhapsody in Blue!

Nihal said...

Yeap, seems beautiful. But I should underline that Turkish beaches -Aegean and especially Mediterranean- are NUMERO UNO. Nothing... nowhere can be compared with ours:)

Still in 2006, great traveller(s)!

Pleasure or business (hm..) trip? Just beautiful in any case!

The advantage with the not so sandy beaches is that the water is soo transparent! Once you have suffered of the walking over the the beach, it's really nice! (... and of course you had your pool!)

You, who have seen everything and been everywhere, visited every restaurant and every nice hotel..., I wonder if you are the other one who has also seen what I show from Paris today?

Wow, stunning!

Hope your daughter managed to get some skiing in this weekend after all. The post you commented on was from one weekend ago when the weather was glorious!

Wow, I must said you seems to be travelling every other month. Looked so relaxed in the above photos. The scenery are so beautiful and the sea so blue.

I completely enjoyed this post, blue sea, blue sky, the view of the Bay, the sunset, the pool…. Just fantastic!

What blues! The closest body of water to where I live is the Mekong and during the day, it's brown. However, at sunset it does glow with all the colors of the rainbow but still...there's nothing like the ocean.

That room 526 seems a little "bijou", with your own pool!!!
September is the best month to visit that area...much less crowded, but still warm from the summer sun..
Do take your time showing us the rest of this island tour,I don't want it to stop....

These pictures are what I was wishing for all my life: because I never made it to Greece!

But in your pictures Gil, it's like being there, breathing the salty air and feeling the warm sun.....I'm in Greece!:-)

This is a loverly place, and you sure look like you are having a wonderful time. I specially loved two of the pics here ... "sea entrance" and "sunset".

I see you have reached towards the end of 2006 ... you have almost caught up with the times :-D Though what I am really really waiting to see is your pics of Taj!

Awww you've made me all homesick now!! I really miss the Greek blue of the sea and sky - Britain's way too grey for my liking!

BTW you know Greeks tend to not like sandy beaches because the sand gets everywhere? Each to their own, I guess. I'm happy to settle for a beach that's not muddy and water that's not freezing cold :-)

I've never been to Portugal, but I'd love to visit sometime & go to the Algarve etc.

Joy said...

Oh my gosh! You've been to Crete. I'm so jealous! Love your pictures. Love the wonderful blue sea, and the pink sky and the general chill out atmosphere that can only be Greek.

Thanks for visiting Norwich Daily Photo and for leaving your comments. Do visit again! Hope you're enjoying your week. Feels like Friday already to me!

Nihal,
OK, but you’re highly suspect when it comes to deal with Turkish beaches… ;))

Peter,
Pleasure! Actually those were the only ten days in 2006 that may be considered holidays… With regard to the sand, it might be true, but, anyhow, I prefer sandy beaches… ;)
Now, St. Germain, you know already I’ve seen it!

Z,
Thanks! Actually, she had three gorgeous skiing days (at the beginning), one acceptable and three awful (two of them at home playing cards…)!

Alice SG,
I used to travel almost every week, at least once every fortnight. Now, I’m stuck! Five or six times a year and that’s all… ;((

Medam,
Thanks! You’re not that far…

Chanpheng,
Thanks for your visit and comment (first time, I believe). I also love the Oceans, but would love to see your Mekong River. One day…

Azer Mantessa,
Mediterranean Sea, 160 km south of mainland Greece, crossroads of Europe, Egypt and Middle East…

Marie-Noyale,
526 was actually a treat! And you’re quite right about September; actually, the last week in August, when children are already in school in Germany and Switzerland and most families are back home, might also be a nice choice… There will be lots of Crete in the next months as we got back there in 2007!

Jo,
There are thousands of good reasons for a Greek Islands tour…

Leena,
You’ll get your Greek pictures, but it’s time to get to Portugal… ;))

Sue,
Thanks! Glad that you enjoyed; actually it’s difficult to be insensitive to that blue…

Shionge,
Once you try it, you won’t forget it. And the temperature is so nice (at least when I compare with your lovely Singapore… ;)

Letitia,
Well, many people never had it so good… ;)

Sigma,
Glad to see your feeling better! Sea Entrance is also one of my favourites! With regard to Taj pictures, I’ll hopefully post them by March 2009, provided that I manage to close the gap to roughly 12 months… ;))

Lyliane,

Pryiank,
Thanks!

Lakshmi,
Blue is also my favourite! I’ll check your beaches next weekend!

Emily,
Loved to see you here! And commenting!
Don’t be envious; it’s not such a small world and there is still so much to see… ;))

Gizelle,
So we are two in blue…
Thanks for your tips on making pictures larger. I’ll try once I manage to get some time to get back to template and the rest… Thanks a lot!

Trijnie,
You’re welcome!

Anna-Lys,
Thanks! Loved to land at your blog!
xoxo!

Tinsie,
Homesick? Come to Portugal; it’s not that far…
I understand the sand problem, but those golden beaches are unbeatable…

Joy,
Thanks!
You’re getting close to your TGIF!

Dalicia,
Nice programme!

Paul,
Thanks! Room 526 was actually a treat.

Indrani Ghose,
Thanks. Goa is also on my list; one day…
I’ll check your chatback!

Alice,
Il ne faut pas être jaloux; et c’est vrai que ce n’est pas facile à trouver du temps pour se promener… Merci!

Jenn,
Thanks!

JoAnn,
Blue is beautiful! And it’s not true that I’m always on holiday; the point is that this is supposed to be a travel blog… ;))
Anyhow, you are actually always travelling… ;) So envious! ;))

See, these are the whites and blues I was talking about in the other post. :-)

Love the beautiful hotel pool.

Mirabello Bay is very aptly named...And I love the photo of your wife, waiting for the boat!

Ming,
That duplex room was magnificent...

Isabella,
Mirabello is beautiful! But I believe the view towards Spinalonga was more impressive. The «Wait», fortunately, was not for Godot...

Noushy Syah,
So, Blues we are two! But my love started with F.C.Porto (in 1955/1956) where José reached his glory first ) in 2003/2004) ;)
The hotel was more than pleasant, I tell you! Though the rates...

So Trotter....I've seen them all (so to speak) and among other things notice your expertise in hiring aircraft (you've been influneced by all those ads in the FT). Well done. What a great set of Greek pics!!!

I notice youv'e not been to Dubai..yet. And you haven't been to Papua New Guinea....so at least for a minute or two I have the advantage over you. ;-) Happy dyas. Tks for dropping in so gracefully. Glad you see the best in dear old Brentford

Anonymous said...

Chuckeroon,
Hiring aircraft was a case of absolute need...
PNG, OK! I had a friend that went there in 1982 or 83, but I never had the idea to go... Now Dubai is different; I was checking the Burj-al-Arab and they were fully booked up to tonight, so I had to give up... ;))
