"THE ROCK - The name GIBRALTAR seems to come from the Arabic name of Jebel at-Tariq meaning mountain of Tariq, the general who led the Moorish invasion in 711. Later Gibraltar was part of the Kingdom of Granada, and in 1462 it was reconquered by the Duke of Medina Sidonia ending 750 years of Moorish control.
